Complementary Holistic & Integrative Medicine at WFUSM January 1 – December 31, 2006 Compiled by Kathi J. Kemper, MD, MPH Caryl J. Guth Chair for Holistic and Integrative Medicine Professor, Departments of Pediatrics, Public Health Sciences, and Family Medicine Overview Definitions of Integrative Medicine "Integrative Medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship
between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use
of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal
health and healing. " The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine May 2005 “Integrative medicine combines “mainstream medical therapies and CAM therapies for which there is
some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.”
The National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) WFUSM is among the leading programs nationally in academic integrative medicine.

Interest in the field at WFUSM remains high during 2006:
• > 160 WFUSM faculty from 34 departments pursuing academic work in this field. • > $17.5 million in research funding received in 2006.* Funding sources include the NIH,
foundations, industry and philanthropy. Research on herbs and dietary supplements
(>$6 million) leads WFUSM CAM research. • Eighty-two (82) peer-reviewed manuscripts were published. • 42 presentations were given locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. • Clinical services at WFUBMC: Massage therapy (through PT/RT), music, art and more • Active website: www1.wfubmc.edu/phim - 6,500 hits/year. • Newsletters: 3
We are grateful for the philanthropic support, research funding, faculty interest and institutional
support for this vital area and look forward to continued productivity and new partnerships in the
future.
