1 September 2001 S S u u b b S S c c r r i i p p t t The Sunstar Sub Aqua Newsletter Qualifications Ahoy! Welcome to September’s Subscript. This has turned into quite a short issue compared to
those of late. This seems down to a slight quietening on the diving front but a good burst of activity on the training side likely to finish the year on quite a high note. Raj Mistry (Training Officer) and Tracey Skirrow (Diving Officer) both report excellent progress in
training and quite a few full club qualifications gained. Well done to all concerned, both trainees and trainers! Sharon Buckingham has provided details on some up and coming social events – including Barn Dance, Friends & Family Try-Dive and the Dive Show. Please make an effort to attend as these are always good fun and an excellent way to meet and stay in touch with
club members, even if you’ve had a break from diving. Karen Gould is trying to plan a trip to Menorca. This is off the beaten track for the club, but sounds like a nice location. Please think about joining Karen. Paul Thomas has provided a nice article (especially for the newer divers) on the reasons and benefits of Nitrox
diving. Finally we have a trip report from Craig Snowling on his first sea dive experience. Apologies to Craig as this should have gone in last month, but slipped through the content net. Unfortunately there are no new club photos this
month, so for those of you who missed the news articles, I thought I’d just show “Barney” – the 3ft1”, 60yr old, Lobster Monster – the biggest in Europe, almost getting cooked in a London restaurant recently and probably the star of a future Godzilla or Jaws sequel. I’m sure we’ve glimpsed Barney’s bigger
brothers off Weybourne! So keep your eyes open new trainees! I didn’t have time to provide an update to Alex so here is a couple of months worth of train successes and new. C C O O N N G G R R A A T T U U L L A A T T I I O O N N S S Congratulation and well done to the those listed below for gaining the following qualifications: Snorkeller Holley Tonge Charlotte Saucede Club Diver Mark Smyth Craig Snowling Not bad as you get a second mention. Sport Diver Suzy Thompson Drew Thompson Duncan Jay Christian Walker Dive Leader Paul Beaumont Rob Spray Peter Onion Also thanks to all of the instructors who have put in a lot of effort behind the scenes to helping these club members gain their qualifications. You efforts are much appreciated. D D I I V V E E R R T T R R A A I I N N I I N N G G Club Diver (CD) Most of our remaining Club Diver students are nearing completion of their open water training and a final burst of activity should get them clear. Sarah, Shane and Dom have
either got the assessment left to do or have yet to do the SMB use. The later should not take long and could be done at Alton or as part of a drift
dive. If you can get out on one of the club trips in the near future then try and get on one. Fiona and Shaun are not far behind and although they started their open water training much later than the rest have already caught up. Sport Diver (SD) The following people have gone through the Sport diver training (pool and lectures) and all but one has passed the SD exam. The person who has not passed will be re-sitting the exam in the next couple of
weeks. Our current SD trainees are: Mark Smyth Craig Snowling Fiona Simpson Shaun Brame Dom Nash Shane Bradford Jacki Gillis Tracey has suggested a date for doing a blitz on the open water training on the 15 and 16 September. IF instructors are able to help please let Tracey know. This weekend is currently the same as
the Farnes trip so at least one instructor and some of the students will be away. However that should not stop others from progressing. Dive Leader (DL) The remaining DL students are progressing training with some waiting to the rescue and lift dives.
Andy Auchterlonie is waiting to do the PRM course to complete his DL training, Susie Young is also waiting to do the PRM course and has one of the open water dives (leading an SD) to cover. It should be possible to do
this during the Oban trip to get this out of the way. Alex Edwards, Mike Elliott and Zimran Choudhary are progressing their remaining open water dives and should be looking to complete these by the end of
September. Zimran has made good progress and will buddy up with Paul Thomas who has recently joined the club. Paul was an AD but has not dived for a long time so has agreed to re-visit the open water
training to “bring it all back to him”. Advanced Diver (AD) There are several people currently progressing through their DL training who have nearly completed the required number of SDC’s to gain their AD qualification. The completion of the remaining SDC is
not the end of it though. There is still and assessment for shore and boat marshalling to carry out and an exam (yes, there’s always and exam) to complete. However those of you who are close should be considering attendance on the appropriate SDC
that are currently being organised (See below) and then look to progress on the marshalling/exam. I I N N S S T T R R U U C C T T O O R R T T R R A A I I N N I I N N G G Assistant Club Instructor (ACI) Duncan Jay has applied for the ACI
course this year so we should get another instructor to help with pool training and lectures shortly. I would recommend this course as it will help you improve your diving skills. Instructing is also a very good
way of keeping your skills up to date as it is quite easy to forget what you have learned when you are not diving. Of course if you are not interested in instructing then regular diving is the other way to
keep your skills fresh. Club Instructor The preparations for the CIE have now been running for several weeks and thanks go to Dave Lock for running these. Paul Beaumont, Barry Manning, Alex Edwards, Rob Spray and
Zimran Chowdhary as well as some additional people form other clubs have been put through their paces by Dave. Open Water Instructor (OWI) In the last article there was a mistake on the number of AOWIs.
Sharon Hart is not currently active with the club and has gone abroad to help with an Operation Raleigh type expedition. Also Andy Mordecai has recently indicate that he will be out of action
whilst he gets a hip problem sorted. Students please note that you need to contact an OWI or Assistant OWI if you require open water training. Advanced Instructors (AI) A few of us are awaiting information on when the next AI course is likely 3 to be run. I will let you know more when I have firm dates. Skill Development Courses Tracey has set a date for the Dive
Planning and Marshalling SDC in October. The lectures will run over the week of the 22 to 26 October (more detail to be supplied) and the weekend of the 27/28 will be used for the practical exercises at Portland.
Only one day is required for the practical exercises so we will use the second day to get some diving in to make the trip worth while. Snorkel Training Dave Tonge has finished training for the current crop of snorkellers.
Holley Tonge and Charlotte Saucede have completed their first stage of training. Loraine Quinton a friend of Holley’s (I think) has had to drop out. Snorkel training can be useful on it’s own or be used as an
introduction to SCUBA training, especially for the young students. That’s all for now. Raj D D I I V V I I N N G G O O F F F F I I C C E E R R A A D D D D I I T T I I O O N N S S Tracey Skirrow Contact mermaid@octosys.co.uk Training Successes So far this year we have managed to qualify 2 Club Divers (Mark Smyth and Craig Snowling), 4 Sport Divers (Chris Walker, Duncan jay, Drew
Thompson and Suzy Thompson) and 3 Dive Leaders (Rob Spray, Paul Beaumont and Peter Onion). Congratulations. As there is loads of training going on at the moment, I know that we will soon have loads
more people to congratulate. Dive Planning and Marshalling Course I am delighted to announce that we will be running a Dive Planning and Marshalling Course. It will be held at Adastral Park and in Portland over the week of 22nd ~ 28 th of October. The lectures will be given in the evenings during the week at Adastral Park, and then we will make our way down to Portland to do the practical sessions, which will take one day only. I suggest that we get ourselves organised to do another day's diving over the
weekend to make the journey worthwhile. The cost will be in the region of 60 pounds per person, this includes all diving costs. You will also need to pay for accommodation and
transport, although the transport should be fairly cheap if we use the minibus. It will be difficult to give an exact price until we have paid out the for the cost of transporting the boat, so I will calculate the exact
total during the course. The minimum entry level for this course is Dive Leader. Places are limited, and I expect demand to be high for this course, so rush to give me all of your money now! I need a deposit of 25 pounds by 10th of September from all those who are interested. Please make cheques payable to Sunstar Sub-aqua. You can post them to me or hand them to me at the pub on a Monday night. Dive Leader and Advanced Diver Training Please would everybody who is
thinking of doing Dive Leader or Advanced Diver training next year contact me so I have a rough idea of numbers. That way I can ensure that we run the appropriate lectures or arrange SDC's for you. I can also
work out how many instructors I need to bully into helping with the training. New Qualifications Please can everybody who has recently gained a qualification or done an SDC provide me with a
photocopy of the relevant page from their qualification record book to put into the club records. One very good reason doing this is that if you lose your qualification record book, and the club has a copy it is easy to
provide you with a new one. If we don't have a copy, then it may not be possible for us to stamp up your book. BSAC keeps track of First Class Diver awards, but not of any other grade. If you don't copy of your
book and then lose it, you have effectively lost your qualification. So hand those copies over - you know it makes sense!!! Winter Skill Development Courses I am currently sorting out dates for some Skill Development Courses to
be run over the winter. Skill Development Courses generally last for one or two days, and are great fun and you will pick up lots of tips and information. Many of the courses count towards Dive Leader and Advanced Diver qualifications.
We aim to make the courses as cheap as possible, although the cost will vary depending upon the number of people attending the course and the type of course. Typically the cost will be in the
region of 20 – 25 pounds although Boat Handling, Dive Planning and Marshalling and Combined Nitrox will be in the region of 50 - 70 pounds as they are two day courses. These are the courses I'm proposing
to run: Date Course Entry Level October 22 - 27 th Dive Planning & Marshalling Dive Leader November??? O2 Admin Club Diver December??? Equipment Care Club Diver January??? First Aid Club Diver February??? Boat Handling Any March??? Outboard Engine Maintenance Any (+ boat handling) April??? Combined Nitrox Course Sport Diver + 20 dives May??? Some staff members think this is a good idea, as do I. I have to feed
back at the next meeting so could I have your views please? If there's any incidents or near misses could you log them with the centre please. This is in addition to telling me. SMBs should be reeled in on ascent to show the position of the divers clearly. I've found a few people straying out of the diving area and reminded them where the area is. This does not seem to be people belonging to
clubs but individuals who have been "professionally trained"!! The line marking the diving area has been cut and a section removed. Andy Saunders and I replaced it but I find this very disappointing
behaviour. If anyone has any information please let me know. I need someone to take the lead building the platform, any volunteers? in some cheap, early season diving and enjoy Menorca whilst it is still fairly quiet. Here is a quote from my contact in Menorca:- Not only will you enjoy the great diving we have here, but you can enjoy Menorca 'out of season' where
the emphasis is on peace and relaxation, the perfect escape from the horrible British winter weather! There are also lots of interesting places to visit 'on land', ranging from the breathtaking views from
Menorca's highest point, Monte Toro to the mysterious archaeological sights scattered all around the island. If you want to go diving and have some fun, let me know, we'll take
care of the rest. http://www.crystalseas- scuba.com/Main/English/Recreationa l/index.html It will be great to experience some completely different diving from the
Red Sea and explore the Island a bit too. Let's be adventurous and try somewhere new? (After all, Sunstar’s enjoyed Sardinia and Gozo, which were both cheap and different) What could be a better break away? Why not bring those non-diving partners too? We did two days worth of diving from Southwold at the end of June, the
most memorable part of this for me was that fact that John and Frances Cook managed to lose a thousand tons of wreck! Then we had two trips from Weybourne in North Norfolk, the first run by John Cook and the
second by myself. On the second weekend, we took both of the club boats and managed to ge 35 dives done over the weekend. Finally, over the Bank Holiday weekend we took Starfish up to Sea Palling and
managed a couple more dives from there, before we were forced to give up due to engine problems. All of these trips have been great fun and brought in some money for the club. Many thanks to all of the people who
have helped arrange trips, collect money, get the boat ready and especially those who have helped to wash the boat down afterwards M M Y Y F F I I R R S S T T S S E E A A D D I I V V E E A A T T W W E E Y Y B B O O U U R R N N E E Craig Snowling Saturday 7 th July With much anticipation and eagerness Saturday finally came, I couldn’t wait for my first sea dive after hearing so much about the wrecks at Weybourne from other
people. I needed to do a sea dive to get my Club Diver qualification. Unfortunately everything did not go to plan, on our camp site (Kelling heath) the new arrivals next to us decided to have a party which went
on until quite late so for the first morning of my sea dive I overslept – not a good start, by the time I had arrived at the beach everybody had the boat in the water and was waiting for me, I kitted up and swam
out to the boat – Lesson number 1. Always make sure that your weights are secure on your belt I didn’t and as I was passing my belt up to john one of the weights fell off. By now I am starting to think this was going to be a bad trip, anyway we made our way out to the paddle steamer 9 miles off shore, with me asking
questions about the boat – how does this work, what does this do? And so on. When we found the spot to drop the marker buoy we did so and then started to look for the wreck, after a few minutes John found the wreck
and Rob prepared the anchor and shot line, once we had hooked onto the wreck it was decided that Frances and I would be the first pair down to the wreck, as I got kitted up with the boat bobbing up and down I
promptly threw up over the side of the boat – Lesson number 2 I did not take any seasickness tablets and look what happened. Because I was feeling so bad I decided to forgo the first dive of the day. Rob and Dawn
when down to the paddle steamer and came up saying what an excellent dive it had been. We then made our way back to shore so a dive could be made on the Rosalie by now I was feeling much
better and looking forward to the dive, once we kitted up (with a borrowed weight belt) Francis went in first and I followed, once we were down onto the wreck the first thing that struck me was how beautiful the wreck was with all the white sea
anemones all over it, it reminded me of a white Xmas. One thing I had not anticipated was the current Francis kept close and at times was holding my hand to make sure we did not drift apart. The most magical
moment was when an eel swam right in front of us, for my first sea dive this is one I shall not forget in a hurry. Once back on shore we had a break whilst waiting for the next slack
water so the Rosalie could be dived again, when the time was right we kitted up for the swim back to the boat, me with the borrowed weight belt from John, with John and Rob in the boat it was my turn to get in
and you can guess what happened next whilst passing John’s weight belt back to John I dropped it to the water never to be seen again with me cursing to myself and John seemingly calm but probably
wanting to throttle this stupid trainee I finned up into the boat with the words ‘your not the first and probably won’t be the last’ ringing in my ears we set off back to the Rosalie, with nobody forthcoming to loan me a third weight belt I sat out
the last dive and waited for Rob and Dawn to return to the boat. Apart from the weight belt problems this was a fantastic dive for me and I cannot thank John, Frances, Rob and Dawn for putting up with this trainee with a passion for weight
belts. Craig ‘Weight Belt’ Snowling. W W W O O O R R R D D D S S S O O O F F F W W W I I I S S S D D D O O O M M M Articles and jottings from club members on advancing skill and

support for the use of rebreathers in club diving. This is provided, of course, that the diver is adequately trained and skilled in their use. Rebreathers are the ultimate in oxygen enriched diving but in my experience there remains
considerable, and quite unnecessary, mystique attached to the use of both enriched air nitrox and all mixed gas diving. I am sure we will see an increasing use of rebreather enriched trimix
diving in shallower waters, since a 3- litre oxygen cylinder at 232 bar contains 696 litres and enough oxygen for a 7 hour dive! In practice human physiology (oxygen toxicity, decompression and cold) and the life
of the carbon dioxide scrubber limit the duration of any rebreather dive but as with all diving the real bogey is Nitrogen. Nitrogen absorption, or on-gassing, is the cause of the two major problems when diving, first
the need to allow for decompression and second, inert gas narcosis. There are good physiological reasons for all divers to use an Oxygen enriched breathing gas. This is because the rate of inert gas transfer is determined by the pressure
gradients of the various gases within body tissue compartments and the same gases brought from the lungs. When 100% oxygen is breathed as it contains no Nitrogen no Nitrogen is absorbed. Unfortunately pure
Oxygen cannot be used for diving as it is toxic when it’s partial pressures greatly exceeds 1 bar. A happy medium can be obtained with enriched air nitrox where the partial pressure of oxygen at the target 6 depth is set at 1.4 bar as recommended by BSAC. At a minimum nitrox increases the
margins of safety or it can be employed to reduce decompression penalties. For example, the popular "Pro-planner" software gives a total decompression penalty of 19 minutes for a 20-minute dive to 40 M on air
alone, with the first stop at 12 metres. If Nitrox 28% is used for the actual dive this gives a safe pp O 2 of 1.4 bar ((40/10+1) x 0.28), the first stop is at 9 meters and 80% oxygen can be used for decompression. The
total decompression penalty is reduced to a much more acceptable eight minutes. Another great advantage of nitrox diving is less fatigue following a dive (this is argued by some - I definitely
feel better). Although, in theory, Oxygen should be more narcotic than Nitrogen, most divers discount oxygen as a cause of narcosis in which case a dive to 30 metres on Nitrox 36 has approximately the
same narcotic effects as a dive to 24 metres on air. (Equivalent Narcotic Depth in “Trimix-speak”). There are disadvantages too. The diver must track O 2 exposure as well as N 2 and use a little maths to ensure he has the right gas for the
target depth. Consequently all nitrox cylinders MUST be labelled with the mix they contain but mistakes can and do occur so it is essential to test the final mix immediately before every dive. In addition the nitrox
diver’s kit must be cleaned and fit for oxygen service. Oxygen itself also costs a little more than air but we are lucky to have a nitrox pumping station locally as this cost is insignificant when one adds up the
true costs of any dive and in my opinion it is money well spent as more run time is spent on the wreck and less on the shot line!
